About Invisalign

Having straight teeth is more than just having a nice smile. When teeth are out of alignment, your entire mouth is susceptible to a vast array of oral issues such as biting and chewing discomfort, frequent inner cheek biting, periodontal disease due to hard to clean areas, speech and breathing problems, and even alterations to the structure of the face.

In the past the most effective treatment available to remedy this problem were traditional metal braces. At Schultz Family dental of Park Ridge, Dr. Schultz is certified in treating patients for invisalign, that does not require any metal in your mouth.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an approach to a straight and beautiful smile. In fact, it has been officially approved by the FDA since 1998. The Invisalign device itself is a springy plastic retainer that is formed to the precise shape of the patient’s mouth. Over time, the pressure that the device applies to the teeth shifts them into a different alignment, slowly but surely defining the perfect smile.

Invisalign is not the optimal option for everyone. There are some cases that are too difficult, and would benefit from traditional braces. Invisalign is also more of a commitment to maintenance than conventional braces. Whereas metal braces are temporarily fixed to your teeth, Invisalign come as a set of removable aligners.

Benefits of Invisalign

The transparent nature of Invisalign is a huge benefit over wire braces. However, there are even more reasons for dental patients to consider correcting their teeth with Invisalign.

For example, Invisalign is widely-touted as being much more comfortable to wear as opposed to its alternatives. There are no uncomfortable brackets and wires involved in securing the device to the patient’s teeth. It does not contain any irritants, such as metal bits that may be sharp and cause cuts or sores in the mouth. And, unlike braces, Invisalign does not put any restrictions on what the patient can and cannot eat.

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits to Invisalign over traditional braces is the ability to keep them clean. Since Invisalign aligners are removable, they can be cleaned as often as necessary. It is also much easier to clean your teeth than brushing around wires and brackets.

How getting Invisalign treatment works

Like traditional braces, the length of time your Invisalign treatment takes is dependent on the severity of misalignment. However it should be noted that most adult patients who choose Invisalign see satisfactory results in as few as 12 months on average.

When a patient is ready to begin straightening his or her teeth with Invisalign, the first step is to create a set of dental records in order to initiate the process. This set of records includes patient photos, impressions, as well as dental x-rays.

From here your information is sent to Align Technology, the company behind Invisalign. At their offices they will convert all of the provided data into an accurate 3D representation of your mouth from which your custom made aligners are made. Due to many factors the exact length of time that this entire process takes can vary from 3 weeks or more.
